Here is a very high polygon model in Virtools. Click and drag to rotate it.

People always ask "how many polygons can Virtools render? The fact is this question can't be answered, since it depends about what we're talking about: polygons in the whole scene or polygons in the view frustum? It also depends on the size of the polygons (for instance, 3D cards benchmarks are usually based on 25-pixels triangles).

So, the best solution is always to test your models! Most of the time, just throwing the models in and clicking 'Play' doesn't give the best results. Using optimization techniques greatly improves the rendering speed (see 'tips' about that).

This example is here to show that yes, Virtools can render 50000 polygons at a decent framerate on today's average PC. But again, '50000 polygons' doesn't mean much if you don't consider their average size, plus the optimization techniques used...
